Our Turn Podcast is made up of a group of women who are pulling out the chairs around the table and inviting everyone to sit down and join the game and the conversation. Gaming is a fun social hobby that invites conversation, interaction, and connection between people of diverse backgrounds and points of view. Sitting across the game table and engaging in an entertaining pastime can break down barriers and open up lines of communication. We plan to use this podcast to be a positive, inclusive, and active voice in the gaming industry and the gaming community-at-large.
Meet the Team
Cathy Ford – Host/Producer/Twitter Account Manager/Guild Master: Cathy is a happily married Wife, Puppy Mama, and Technical Trainer in Antelope, CA. She enjoys walking her dogs, reading, watching political, sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, and documentary TV shows and movies. Even more than that, she enjoys playing and teaching board, card, and role-playing games with friends and family members. Her favorite game mechanics are pick-up-and-deliver, legacy, and storytelling. She is currently working on and blogging about her 52 Game Challenge project. Cathy also enjoys working, teaching, learning, and playing on computers and the Internet. You can find Cathy on Twitter (@CathysBrain), Pinterist, and BoardGameGeek.com. Cathy manages the Board Game Geek Guild for the show (Guild #2600) and the Twitter account.
Sarah Reed – Host/Facebook Manager: Sarah is an avid board game fanatic and married to an amazing LEGO builder named Will. These two hobbies keep them busy and fill their house to the brim. They help run a local board game designer group as well as a local LEGO club. They have designed and published one board game so far, Project Dreamscape, through the wonderful platform of Kickstarter. Sarah can be found on Twitter @EuroGamerGirl, a name she chose because she enjoys euro and strategy games the most, followed by deck-builders and cooperative games. She is most well-known for her involvement and support of Kickstarter board game projects and the play 10 board games 10 times challenge on BoardGameGeek.com.
Mark Ford – Production Assistant: Mark is the first male member of the Our Turn Podcast team. He’s also Cathy’s husband and is helping out on the back-end of the show by editing the files and helping to produce the show and manage the web site.
Jessica Wade – Former Host: Jessica is a California girl who’s been transplanted on the East Coast in Virginia where she became a forensic firearms examiner. After years of trying to be an outdoor person, she finally came to realize that she is just an indoor girl who loves movies, TV, and reading, and in 2015 she was introduced to the world of hobby boardgaming. After being introduced to this hobby, she realized that this was what had been missing in her life and she dove in headfirst. One of her favorite things to do is attend conventions. In her first two years as a boardgamer she attended both the Origins Game Fair and Gen Con, and she attended the annual UnPub convention twice. This is all in addition to several smaller cons she attended in Virginia and also North Carolina. She loves getting to try out the new hotness before non-convention goers, but she especially loves all of the amazing new people she gets to meet in the boardgaming community. In her first couple years of this hobby, one game designer’s style has stood out among the rest, Stefan Feld, which is why Jessica’s Twitter handle is @feldfangirl. In addition to Twitter, you can find Jessica as a co-host on the State of Games Podcast, and an occasional contributor to the What Did You Play This Week Podcast.
Ella Dowell – Former Producer/Graphic Designer: Ella is an artist, focused mainly on photography and filmmaking, but she’s also a graphic designer, audio engineer, and web designer. Ella graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Photography in 2010. From 2011 – 2015, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jordan. Ella is currently living in her hometown of Sacramento, California. In addition to art, her hobbies include traveling; visiting historical, cultural, and natural landmarks; going to museums; watching TV series and documentary films; learning new things; and, of course, tabletop gaming! Ella loves all types of tabletop games including board games, card games, and role playing games. A few of her favorite tabletop games include 7 Wonders, Firefly the Board Game, Machi Koro, Lords of Waterdeep, Tales of Arabian Nights, and The Castles of Burgundy. Ella manages our Twitter account (@OurTurnPodcast).
Nicole Martin – Former Host: Nicole is a psychology student at Humboldt State University. She contributes most of her free time to her campus nerd council: ROBOT. As a member of the council, she spends a great deal of time at gaming events such as Magic drafts, Night of The Living Games (a 48 hour gaming event held on campus) and D&D sessions. When she can, she goes on various adventures to the Humboldt forests and beaches. Video games are her specialty, but as of late she has been enveloped in the worlds of Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Nicole manages our Instagram and Snap Chat accounts.
Maida – Former Host/Guild Master: Maida is a lifetime geek and has been involved in some sort of gaming for as long as she can remember. Raised on a plethora of card games, she was known for running Spades tournaments instead of going to class in college. From there, she graduated to playing duplicate Bridge and got into board games. Her heart belongs to heavy euro games these days. The more it burns her brain, the happier she is! Her other interests include watching re-runs of Battlestar Galactica, participating in crossfit, powerlifting, painting miniatures, playing with her 4 labradors, eating pizza, cheering for the Oakland Athletics, and trying to learn to play a musical instrument (currently the sansula). From time to time she updates her instagram account @barbellsandboardgames.
Melissa – Former Host/Google Pro: Melissa, known to some as Dr WoW, once wrote a dissertation about leadership development in World of Warcraft. She has since found board games and counts heavy strategy and economic games among her favorites. She will never say no to a game of Power Grid, Ticket to Ride, or anything with Cthulhu. When she’s not playing games, she can usually be found watching baseball or slaying dragons.
